Rain Rain Rain - Flood of 2011
When it floods we get a quick rising; quick falling river through our pasture. This area is typically bone dry - it is not a creekbed. The fence is designed to withstand this kind of rapid water, so we never have any damage. Prior to this photo it was higher - the highest I've ever seen it. It was almost to the top of the fence - 10' of water running through. This was on April 23; on April 24 we received another 3+ inches of rain! On April 25: The rainiest April on record in Lexington before this year was in 1970, with 9.3 inches. April 2011 has had 10.15 inches, with more coming in the next few days. The rainiest month on record was January 1950, with 16.65 inches, according to the National Weather Service in Louisville. Kymesonet.com's data showed that a neighboring county had a total of 12.83" in April. Mom and Dad's county reported 14.25"!!!

This is a view of the neighbors back yard - "upstream".

This is just down our road (downstream) - also a typically dry pasture.

Keep in mind that these Kentucky 4-plank fences are at least 4-5' high and the water is almost over that center circle fence!!

This is our road (at the old railroad crossing; venturing further "downstream") on our way out to look at the flooding. It was maybe 3-4" deep. I've never seen it over the road before.

This is our road on the way back - It rapidly rose to around 6". I wouldn't have crossed it the first time if I knew it would come up that fast in 10 minutes. There is a not a creek that runs near here so this is all just flood runoff.

Cow farm on our road - again not a pond!

Elkhorn at Great Crossing which is on the way to our house- this got up over the access road to the right of the photo!
